In August 2022, the Research Group on Novel Technologies and Law (i.e., YNU Research Group on ELSI) was launched by some faculty members affiliated with the Department of International and Business Law, Graduate School of International Social Sciences, Yokohama National University.
Research on ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) is focused on the issues that the development and social implementation of new science and technology may bring about. This academic field is playing a leading role in responsible research and innovation (RRI). In recent years, those engaged in research and development projects have been required to recognize ELSI, even at these projects’ seed stage, and they must work responsibly to realize the well-being of society by introducing such science and technology. The YNU Research Group on ELSI will examine the social acceptability of new technologies based on comprehensive knowledge gathered from participants of various backgrounds who are not limited to law and political science researchers. Furthermore, through dialogue with experts from the research and development fields, the research group aims to function as a forum that connects existing social issues and their solutions through new science and technology.
